2014 Wedding Trend Predictions

The DIY Bride team is on vacation this week. While we’re away, I (Madame Khrishna: Knows All, Sees All) thought it’d be fun to offer up my predictions for trends that’ll surface or evolve in 2014.

In no particular order:

1. Faith and Heritage. After several years of faith and heritage being downplayed in weddings, this year we’ll start seeing a resurgence in these two elements as a means of celebrating and elevating the deeply personal aspects of the couple. We’ll be seeing a lot more multi-cultural, interfaith elements proudly displayed and honored in 2014 weddings.

2. Hand-lettering and typography will remain huge in stationery design.

3. Gilding and gold accents will gain popularity.

4. Vintage will remain as a top style choice but I see it going a bit more refined this coming year. Instead of a generic vintage we’ll see more of influence from the Roaring Twenties and Belle Époque era along with 1950s glam.

5. Rustic, too, will skew towards something more refined. Instead of “barn” themes, I imagine we’ll start seeing equestrian-styled weddings, for example, along with “industrial-rustic”.

6. We’ll be seeing a lot more florals in stationery designs. Think hand-painted or intricate graphic designs.

7. Speaking of flowers, I predict pods/dried flowers, berries, and protea will have big gains in popularity this year as will creative use of greenery.

8. Monochromatic color schemes will be big this year in everything as well as a turn towards traditionally male color schemes (dark greys, leathery browns, deep blues).

9. In wedding gowns, this will be the year of the back detail and the dainty sleeve.

10. Maritime themes – especially those with a preppy or vintage flair – will be a huge part of 2014.

11. As for crafts, die cutting will be HUGE. Jewelry-making on a small scale (earrings, necklaces, bracelets) will be a big deal as will DIY letterpress-like printing.

12. In catering 2014 is the year of the Foodie Couple. I expect to see more daring menu choices than ever. (Is Beef Wellington enough out of date to be retro and fetishized yet?)

13. I think couples will look for interesting and unusual places to use as ceremony and reception venues in 2014.

14. The tin can will be the new mason jar. (Seriously!)

15. Wedding videos will become as important as wedding photos.

What are your predictions for 2014?

Jackie + Mike’s Vintage Country Wedding

The new year is upon us and I figured we should go out on a bang!  And Jackie + Mike’s wedding is just the what the doctor ordered! Katherine O’brien Photography has captured the perfect blend of modern & vintage with this Instagram-y meets portrait perfection and country-chic cool  event.  With the most amazing custom attire including the groom’s vest and an amaze two-fer gown and bridesmaids that helped DIY the hair and makeup, there’s no shortage of style for this Minnesota couple that wed in Texas.

I love the shades of whites and lace that contrast the rugged Texas backdrop.  Jackie’s got some awesome pals.  her bridesmaids got a DIY tutorial for Jackie’s hair and makeup (which were perfect) and the sparkly modern, yet rustic airstream-like invitations were designed by a friend.  The floral and bouts were all handmade and I loved the interactive centerpieces where guests lit candles and made a wish for the happy couple!

As amazing as this wedding is, it kind of gives me the sads.  Not only is it the last of the year, but it’s the last I’ll be privileged to share with you as the Real Weddings Coordinator here at DIY Bride.  I want to thank all of you for letting me share in your special days.  A special thanks to Katherine O’brien Photography for sharing this very memorable wedding for a me.  And a big congratulations and thanks to Jackie and Mike!

A DIY Ethereal Styled Inspiration Shoot

Sometimes wedding vendors need to scratch their creative itch too.  And when they do; Oh, the magic they make!!!  This super, natural inspiration shoot from Samantha Bonpensiero Photography is like an intimate, ethereal wedding dream full of texture and soft colors that reaches every last sense and  leaves you aching for more.

From the photographer:

We chose natural elements like wood, various mosses, textured pottery and slate to set the tone at the table. Succulents, & protea helped amp up the texture level while keeping the color palette subdued. We didn’t limit sensory experience of the tablescape to visual texture though. The contrast of the rough natural elements with smooth colorless glass dishes & a slick Primordial Martini (white chocolate & hazelnut liqueurs with vodka) brings a sense of sophistication to the scene.

Pretty and yummy right?  Well it doesn’t stop at the delish signature cocktail idea, the “geodes” on the plates are a scrumptious combo of solid vanilla sugar crystals coated in white chocolate, and dusted in mixed sugars with a hint of sea salt. Every last detail from primitive pained rocks to wild wire around the hurricanes yields an awesomely modern and earthy vibe.

I don’t know about you, but anytime you combine protea, sig-cocktails, and chocolate rocks you can color me inspired!  Thank you to Samantha Bonpensiero Photography and the team that created this divine shoot.

Bryn + Paul’s Bohemian Spring Wedding

This is one of those weddings.  You know the kind I’m talking about.  The kind that you spend hours gazing at some of the sweetest, coolest, prettiest details and find something prettier with each view.   The kind that you return to over and over and find yourself smiling alongside some of the funnest (yes-that’s a word today) couples as if you were there kind of weddings.   Perfectly captured by Brooke Courtney Photography, this one that’s sure to make a top ten favorites list!

So let’s talk about these ridiculously amaze details that were the perfect compliment to The Old Mill‘s ivy covered walls and beautiful outdoor spring setting.  All of the fern and tree stump centerpieces brought the wonderful woodland feel inside for the reception.  To add equal parts woodsy, vintage, and boho touches the wooden garland, pearl string chandeliers and nest favors were beyond a gorgeous compliment to Bryn’s cray cray pretty floral shrug.   Bryn handmade the little yarn nests and filled them with moss, paper flowers, and a seed bomb.  While we’re on the subject of paper flowers- are you dying over those portraits yet?

Most of all this wedding captures the fun and love between friends and family.  Three friends performed a ridiculous dance to Florence and the Machine’s,  Cosmic Love, which was a hit on it’s own!  Thank you Brooke Courtney Photography for sharing such a fun and fabulous wedding! Congratulations Bryn + Paul!

The details really speak for themselves, from the handmade flower bouquets and boutonnieres to the incredible centerpieces only a blue box might be better.

Kayla + Jacob’s Glamorous Vintage Wedding

Merry Christmas crafties!  I hope you all had a wonderful day full of family, friends, and lots of love.  Today’s wedding is super vintage glam fest with an edgy feel to it.  Captured by B. Jones Photography this red dazzler is sure to inspire brides to be for all seasons!

Kayla and her maid of honor made the brooch bouquet together. Most of the brooches featured in the bouquet belonged to Kayla’s late great grandmother or were collected at flea markets. The large key on one side of the bouquet was given to Kayla by her great grandfather before he passed away.  A family friend made the belts special for the bridesmaids.   Every bit of vintage flair was a part of Kayla’s personal collection or loaned to her by her grandmother.   Even the cake topper was her grandparents. 46 years ago.   From the arbor, to the paper flowers, this whole wedding was created by a compilation of family, friends, and loved ones.

Thank you B. Jones Photography for sharing this brilliant wedding!  Congratulations Kayla + Jacob!

Haley + Daryn’s First Look/Bridal Session

Bridal sessions are always beautiful.  First looks are always heartwarming and fun.  And then Haley and Daryn come along with Breanna McKendrick Photography to combine two good ideas into one perfect shoot.  While this combo bridal sesh/ first look is a stroke of genius, I have to admit, I keep getting distracted by Haley’s handmade combo gown.  Just like the photos session, Haley combined two looks in the same dress to create a wonderfully whimsy and unique look!

From the photographer:

Haley wanted a rustic look for her bridal/first look session. She found a dress that she loved at David’s Bridal, but knew that the top of the dress was just not for her. With a few snips of the scissors, Haley had her perfect skirt of her wedding dress, and paired it with her country rustic shirt. It was a playful and charming way to really make her dress truly her own and unique.

Paired with a pretty lacy top for the first look, this fab gown is everything rustic and elegant we love!

From color combos to dress combos and shott combos alike, we only hope you’ll share the rest of your wedding combos with us!  Thanks so much Breanna McKendrick Photograpy for being a part of and sharing this super combo shoot!  Congratulations Haley and Daryn!

Tracy + Gary’s Offbeat Vegan Wedding

“You gave me the best mixtape I have.'”  That’s just a line from one of my favorite tunes  “Mixtape” by artist Butch Walker, and it could also be the tagline for Tracy and Gary’s wedding.  A super sweet tale of modern love that began online via a music swapping community; where mixtapes led to friendship, roadtrips, and finally to a totally rad, handmade event captured by OKRFOTO.

Held at Tracy + Gary’s favorite restaurant, Revolution Brewing in Chicago, vegan treats like mini vegan hot dogs, specialty vegan donuts, and of course, great beer were delish treats for guests.  Friends and family all pitched in to create an easy going, elegant vibe filled with blush, purple and green florals arranged by Tracy’s mom, cupcake liner roses, chalkboard signs, the prettiest pinwheel alter I’ve ever seen, and an awesomely lit marquee sign!

Thank you OKRFOTO for capturing all of the eclectic little details and fun filled mix tape-like goodness that this wedding is about!  Congratulations Tracy + Gary!

Candice + Anthony’s Handcrafted Vintage Wedding

Oh this wedding my crafties… it is simply spectacular! I don’t even know where to begin!  This wedding combines beer and coffee in the same beverage (cool right?), with dried flowers, a handmade gown to die for and vintage elegance made even better by the photos captured (on film, SWOON!) by Kendra Elise Photography!

From the photographer:

Candice and Anthony requested most of their wedding to be shot in film (a dream come true!)The location was perfect, the sun was shining, love for the couple was evident in every detail hand made by friends and family. The bride made her own dress..HER OWN DRESS! The groom roasts his own coffee & one of his friends brews beer, together they made a special beer using the grooms coffee!

I’m not sure becomes my new DIY wedding superhero more: Candice for creating that stunning gown or Anthony for combining two of favorite things!

Down to the last burlap rose, there is not an inch of this wedding that is short of phenomenal!  Thank you for sharing this wedding Kendra Elise Photography (and for still knowing the art of film)!  Congratulations Candice and Anthony!

Eleni + Rich’s Nautical Engagement Session

So there’s a storm a-comin’!  You know what that means?  It means I long for warm summer days and romantic waterside picnics so badly!  So when I caught a glimpse of Eleni + Rich’s perfectly nautical e-sesh from  No Eye Has Seen, I figured this would be the perfect distraction to keep me all warm and fuzzy while the snow falls this weekend!

With a real lobster dinner on the piers, Eleni and Rich styled this session to reflect their lifestyle and love perfectly!  Colors, textures, and fashions all created a sweet and sophisticated New England kind of romance.

Even though they are feeling the cold an weathering the storm too, Eleni and RIch’s engagement session has certainly brightened my day!  Thank you No Eye Has Seen for sharing this cute, coastal e-sesh.  Congratulations Eleni and Rich!  We hope you’ll share your wonderfully nautical wedding with us too!
